I had a very disappointing experience at Charles de Gaulle Airport and wanted to share it in case anyone else has gone through something similar.
Last year, my partner and I were separated at the pre-security passport triage area because I was travelling with a Canadian passport and he was travelling with a French passport. We live in Canada, he holds Canadian permanent residency, and I'm also an EU citizen since I have a Romanian passport as well.
The Canadian/American line moved very quickly while the EU line barely moved. As a result, I ended up waiting for my partner for quite a while. At one point, a staff member scanned my boarding pass and told me I was at risk of missing my flight. When I explained that we had been separated by a colleague, she actually acknowledged that we should not have been separated in the first place. We still had to take the airport train to another terminal, clear security, and get to our gate. We ended up running through the airport and were among the very last passengers to board.
Because of that experience, we agreed that if possible, we would avoid being separated this year.
When we arrived at the passport triage area on this trip, I calmly tried to explain our previous experience to the employee directing passengers. Before I could finish a sentence, she refused to listen and simply barked instructions at us. I explained that if there was an issue, we would both just use the "All Passports" line together.
That's when things became completely unreasonable.
The employee raised her voice, aggressively blocked our path, and began arguing with us instead of listening. The situation became so uncomfortable that one of her colleagues had to step in. The colleague actually told her to calm down and stop yelling, then asked us what was going on.
After listening to our explanation for less than a minute, the colleague immediately understood and said there was absolutely no problem with us going together through the "All Passports" line.
In other words, the entire confrontation could have been avoided if the first employee had simply listened.
What upset me even more was that as we walked away, the employee made a sarcastic comment toward us. When we responded that this wasn't an appropriate way to speak to passengers, she snapped back that we should learn how to talk to people.
I was honestly shocked. I have travelled through many airports and have dealt with stressed employees before, but I have never been spoken to in such an aggressive and disrespectful manner.
The whole encounter left me shaking, in tears, and extremely upset. What should have been a simple conversation turned into a public confrontation over a perfectly reasonable request.
Most of the airport staff we encountered were professional and helpful, including the colleague who intervened. However, this particular interaction left such a negative impression that it genuinely makes me hesitate to travel through Charles de Gaulle again in the future.
Has anyone else experienced similar behavior at the passport triage area at CDG, or was this just an unfortunate encounter with one individual staff member?
